Selecting crib sets, curtains, area rugs and nursery furniture is the fun part of designing a new baby's nursery.

Now that parents have chosen a theme and painted the walls of their baby's nursery, it's time to bring in the finishing touches.

Crib Sets, Curtains and Area Rugs for the Baby Nursery

Many nursery themes offer several options for crib sets. These sets often include everything from spreads to bumper pads, sheets, window treatments, lamps, area rugs, diaper storage, crib mobiles, and other accents. While sets like these take a bit of the creativity out of designing the room, they can make a big job easier during what is certainly a very busy time.

While effortlessness is the upside to co-ordinated nursery kits, cost can be a major downside. For this reason, many parents opt for the bedding and curtains in a bag, but find less expensive options for other accents.

If the nursery has a hardwood floor, a soft area rug is a must. Rugs give the nursery a warm and cozy feel, and provide a place for parents to play with their new baby.

Furniture for the Baby Nursery

Parents are confronted by a wide array of nursery furnishings, but the truth is, not all of it is essential. If the baby nursery is on the small side, parents should consider each piece of furniture and whether it is absolutely necessary. An open feel to a room is much more welcoming and conducive to play than a cluttered environment.

A crib is probably one piece of furniture most parents will opt for. Many parents select a matching diaper table, but some find it just as easy to change the baby on the dresser or floor. A dresser provides storage for clothing, but if the room has adequate closet space, this piece might be redundant. A shelf for books and toys will probably be a must. And most parents wouldn’t trade the treasured moments of rocking their baby to sleep in a rocking chair or glider for anything in the world.

Since the crib is the largest piece, parents can decide on its spot in the nursery first. They will want to make certain it’s placed in the room’s center or along a wall away from windows. This placement will avoid the hazard of blinds and cords as well as preventing the light from shining in on babies while they’re sleeping. Parents will also want to consider the drafts or burn hazards of any vents, wall heaters, or window air conditioner units in their crib placement.

Decorating the Baby Nursery

Once the walls are painted, the furniture in place, and the curtains hung, parents can finish off their baby nursery with a few fun accents. Affordable ideas include stuffed animals, dolls, and storybooks coordinating with the baby nursery theme. A shelf lined with colorful books, covers facing outward, is a great way for parents to instill an early love of reading.

Designing a nursery can be a highlight of the long months spent waiting for a new baby to arrive. Looking at the task as a fun and creative way to welcome the newest member of the family, will give parents that extra burst of energy to finish the project in time to rock their little one to sleep on their very first night home.
