A barnyard theme for their nursery works well for either a baby girl or a baby boy. Tractors and farmyard animals are a fun and affordable way to decorate.

There’s something simple and happy about a barnyard theme nursery. Parents can use the murals and accent décor to teach the new arrival their first animals and colors. Because of the theme’s popularity, the only problem parents will have is choosing their decor.

Start with the Walls for the Barnyard Theme Bedroom or Nursery

Farm theme wallpaper choices abound for baby nurseries. Parents might also opt for the more affordable coat of paint. But decorators will definitely want to scope out their bed set before painting. Color schemes for farmyard theme bed sets range from primary red barns to John Deer Green tractors to pastel lambs piglets and baby chicks. Many parents even opt for splashes of monochromatic black and white cow patterns to stimulate their baby’s early curiosity.

Once the walls are covered, parents can add a co-ordinating barnyard theme wallpaper border or try their hand at animal stencils. They can use craft paint to add haystacks, barns, silos, cows, horses, pigs, chickens, roosters, donkeys, and sheep. Peel and stick farmyard wall decals or wallpaper murals are an equally attractive option.

To give the nursery some personality, parents can paste a wallpaper border midway up the wall. The lower half can be painted a co-ordinating color and the top half white with cow spots.

Taping off a white “X” on closet doors and painting a red barn pattern can add a great splash of color to a farmyard theme nursery.

Crib Sets, Window Treatments, and Area Rugs, for the Farmyard Nursery

Parents can either choose from the wide array of barnyard theme bed sets, or go with well-known characters from Charlotte’s Web, Babe or Chicken Run.

Co-ordinating curtains often accompany bed sets or crib sets, but do-it-yourself decorators might rather create their own denim window treatments to match denim throw pillows and rocking chair cushions.

If the nursery has a hardwood floor, an area rug will provide an inviting place for the new baby to play. Parents can purchase a rug designed to match their farmyard theme crib set, or save money by choosing a coordinating color area rug which might carry into the room’s next theme.

Decorating a Farmyard Theme Nursery or Bedroom

Parents should first take stock of the toy box to see what will help with their decor. Rocking chairs, beds, dressers, and bookshelves are all great places to display plastic tractors, barnyard play sets, and stuffed farmyard animals. A colorful rocking horse is a great accent in a farmyard theme nursery.

Decorators can hang pegs along the wall for a set of farmyard puppets and straw hats. Puppet play and dress up are excellent opportunities for parents to interact with babies and have imaginative fun with older children.

Shelves are a great place to decorate with model tractors, piggy banks, farmyard figurines, and storybooks. Parents can choose books whose covers depict barnyard animals and set them covers facing outward. Some great titles include Big Red Barn by Margaret Wise Brown, Boo to a Goose by Mem Fox, Cluck by Allan Snow, Dr. Duck by H. M. Ehrlich, Hens Say Cluck by Hanah Gifford, If You Give a Pig a Pancake by Laura Numeroff, and Old MacDonald Had a Farm by Colin Hawkins. Decorating with books is an inexpensive way they can instill a love of reading early.

Parents can personalize the room by snapping and framing pictures of their little baby’s first visit to the petting zoo or in an adorable set of overalls. Touches like these make a barnyard theme room feel special and fill it with happy memories.

Decorators will have as much fun as pigs in mud designing a barnyard theme bedroom. And with a little creativity, they can keep the cost down to chicken feed. For other tips and ideas, they can check out articles on ocean, fireman and construction themes.
